The U.S. EPA developed AIRNow in 1998 to provide the public with near real-time ozone concentration data in a simple graphical format via the Internet. STI was contracted to develop new software expanding AIRNow to include pollutants other than ozone (PM10, PM2.5, CO, SO2, and NO2) and increase system speed and performance. The new program operates automatically with only modest intervention from an operator. At the core of the system is Mapping Control (MapCon) software, a centralized program designed to process, manage, and monitor air quality data as it moves through the ozone mapping system. Under this project, STI staff also continued working with weather service providers to increase distribution of ozone maps to the television market.
