STI's GIS specialists develop GIS-based work products that display geographic and environmental data. These efforts rely on our expertise in mapping concepts such as Earth projections and coordinate systems, scale, and cartography. STI GIS specialists regularly prepare technical reports, presentations, and journal articles containing high quality maps.
STI performs field studies using global positioning systems (GPS) and GIS. This work involves verification and digitization of geographic features and development of feature attribute databases.
STI staff installed mobile GPS units (GeoLoggersTM) in randomly selected vehicles in southern California in support of a project to analyze day-of-week emissions activity and air quality patterns on ozone production in southern California. The GeoLoggersTM collected vehicle activity data such as trip routes, trip lengths, speeds, and day-of-week driving patterns. Data from the GeoLoggersTM were mapped and analyzed within a GIS. Stationary traffic counters were placed on select roadways in select geographic regions to characterize traffic activity data by road type and land-use area (i.e., residential, industrial. The GeoLoggerTM technology was developed and supplied by GeoStats. Read more about this project.
